How did you get to be an Empowerment Coach?

I wasn’t always an empowered woman executive. I grew up in an era where women were fully accepted only in certain “feminine” roles — wife, mother, nurse, or teacher. So I married and didn’t really look at work as more than a job to make extra money. One day I woke up and thought, “gee, if I’m working fulltime to make extra money (which wasn’t extra anymore) why not look at this J.O.B. as a career? So I learned and worked hard and watched other successful women. That worked for getting promotions and more money, but there was another issue that I wasn’t able to change. The burning issue I saw was men abusing their power over women at work – the sexual innuendos, the outright suggestions that work would be way more lucrative if I would work “more closely” with a male supervisor. I noticed I wasn’t the only one.

I’ve always been drawn to causes related to women and children, and while I worked in corporate America I participated in lots of charity walks and fundraisers to champion women and children. But I wanted to find work that had real meaning, and left the world of corporations. I became a volunteer court appointed special advocate for abused and neglected children, working with teenage and younger girls. What really, really broke my heart was that these young girls had no vision for a better life – no hope for living a passionate life or that they could be different than their parents or their friends had been — and that they believed they were powerless to change.

A few years on the board of directors for Boys & Girls Club further showed me the need to empower women. My calling in life is to break the generational curse we are passing down to our daughters that says, “play small, you’re not good enough, stay in the box that society has drawn around you. Don’t be real, put on a mask that is more acceptable, don’t draw your own box and for heaven’s sake don’t get rid of the box entirely!”

Many, many women who work overly long hours without enough relationship support have consistent feelings of anxiety, failure, and hopelessness—a perfect formula for depression.  And who wants to be depressed??

I knew deep inside it didn’t have to be that way and was determined to figure it out.

So I read (over 500 books) and purchased thousands of dollars worth of training systems and hired coaches and mentors and decided I would become an expert on business, marketing, work-life balance, high performance and most importantly, empowering women. Although I learned a ton from my work experience, getting my business management degree and even more from my coaching certifications, it wasn’t enough. I had to find exactly what worked for me when I implemented it! I tried out tons of strategies to 1) make money with meaning, 2) build super-strong relationships, 3) build a lasting legacy for our children, and 4) bring balance to my life. I discarded lots of these strategies, keeping only the best and easiest that I knew were super-effective. A funny thing happened! My clients noticed I was truly happy when we were together, and asked me what I was doing! I shared with them my strategies and tools that I’d used to build a life I loved, and they wanted to know more.

I realized that my dreams really have come true – I love my work (making money while leaving a legacy,) I love my relationships (with my business colleagues and clients as well as with my family and friends,) and I am contributing to positive world change (through my message as well as by giving 25% of my profits to organizations focused on helping people help themselves) – I am so, so grateful!

I am totally dedicated to helping women entrepreneurs and executives balance a passionate life, working happier, loving happier, and making a difference in the world.

For the last 17 years, I’ve worked with hundreds and hundreds of clients, spoken nationally on work-life balance, leadership, business development, marketing, and resilience, and have created The Balance Academy™, a step-by-step easy-to-use system that every professional woman can apply to live with passion and purpose.

Who are your clients exactly?

I work with wonderful professional women who are really skilled with their businesses and careers, and who are also amazing at home…but struggling with both at the same time! Corporate executives who are great at what they do, but feel their jobs sucking the life out of them and who need a trusted business partner. Entrepreneurs who want love AND independence. They’ve not been taught exactly how to live a life of balance and freedom without giving up too much of themselves.

I’ve worked with all levels of professional people, from CEOs, Business Unit leaders, mid-level executives, technicians, managing partners of law firms, attorneys, clinic directors, psychologists, doctors, social workers, small business owners, probation officers, truancy officers, people in career transition, ministers, non-profit leaders, to troubled teenagers.

What happens if you haven’t yet worked with people in my field?

I’ve worked with hundreds of people across most industries. What my clients have found really helpful is my background and experience in coaching, corporate work, business strategy, performance management, business ownership, nonprofit work, publishing, being a single mom, wife, grandma, volunteer and someone who lives life full out. I believe with all my heart “You CAN Have It All!”

How are you different from other “empowerment coaches?”

My broad background in business (whether corporate, non-profit, or mid- to small business) and strategic intervention coaching gives me a unique take on what works to make things better both professionally and personally.  My mission is to inspire people to live a life of passion and purpose – both at work and at home. Knowing how to build super-strong relationships, bringing meaning to what we do, and having more joy – who wouldn’t get happier with more money, more time to do what you want, and more ways to change the world?  Complex strategies broken down into bite-size steps helps people get happier!

What type of personality do you work best with and what is expected of me?

My Balance Academy™ programs are focused on professional women who are ready to play a bigger game in life – who want to Work Happy – making money with meaning, Love Happy – building super-strong relationships that benefit them personally as well as professionally, and Change the World – paying it forward in some way that resonates with their hearts and lives. I work with people who understand the benefit of investing in themselves, and who are willing to do the work with accountability.

For what type of professional is this program NOT going to work?

I play well with others, but I don’t work with everyone :-).  I feel it’s out of integrity to work with clients who I don’t believe will be successful in my programs.

The Balance Academy™ programs are NOT for those who are absolutely desperate for money.  If you are in financial crisis, I totally understand. AND I also know that it’s very difficult to be focused on and dedicated to a program that has step-by-step assignments that take time and effort. If you’re really really hurting financially, I recommend working with a financial coach first – and I recommend signing up for my free ezine, and implementing the strategies I share every week until you are more on your feet. I don’t work with people who don’t want to put any time or effort into assignments, or who argue and fight against the proven programs I’ve prepared. We just wouldn’t work well together, and I want all my clients to get GREAT value from my programs.

What exactly is The Balance Academy™ and what does it include?

We start with understanding what would make you really happy – with your work, with your relationships, and with making a difference in your world.  Then we look at what your obstacles are in those areas. Then we develop customized actionable strategies that help you break through whatever is getting in your way so your dreams can come true…faster and easier than they would if you were on your own.

Here’s what the Balance Academy™ step-by-step process helps you to do for your business and your life:

  1. Find meaning in your work. Few of us think that work should be meaningful – we as Americans typically think of work as where we make a living, but the living itself takes place after hours. Identifying talents and skills, uncovering one’s work and life values, and assessing your environment can help you love what you do so much you don’t feel like you’re working! Everyone needs a compelling reason to work – we find yours.
  2. Make more money through authentic marketing. Yes, you need to market to make money whether you’re working for someone else or yourself! There are specific essentials that must be in place for successful marketing, or what I call the BRANDofYOU. An overall step-by-step marketing strategy can help turn people who know you into real FFF (friends & fans forever.)
  3. Get the word out about you. Your Knowledge, Experience, Skill, Confidence, Commitment, and Motivation (KESCCM) all contribute into your overall success. But knowing a lot doesn’t mean a lot is known about you. Entrepreneurs and professionals are really good at a lot of things, but communicating differentiation is often not one of them. Use your very own core message about what makes you unique in conversation and in written materials.
  4. Set appropriate boundaries at work and at home. Boundaries help to define who we are and who we are not and help to define the relationships we are in. Boundaries are the internal and external lines that we draw between others and us. When we are aware of our own and others’ boundaries we know how to go about our days, we know how to prioritize our work and activities, and increase our chances of being successful in relationships.
  5. Deeply understand communications as a life and business success factor. Interacting at a deeper level, really seeing into other people and understanding their words, body language, and actions is critical if you want success at work or at home. What is their (and your) languaging preference? Find out what makes you feel understood and how you can understand others.
  6. Build super-strong relationships for the long-term. Empathy, honesty, respect and attention all contribute to creating powerful and sustainable relationships. Developing a rewarding, enduring bond of trust and support is foundational for sustainable relationships at work and at home – and there are specific steps to help.
  7. Connecting to your Change The World (CTW) happiness factors. On most days, many of us sense deep down that we could be something more than we are right now.  I believe we are hard-wired to make a difference. The ancient advice in the Golden Rule might have a truly legitimate scientific basis. When you’re experiencing compassion, benevolence, and kindness, they push aside any negative emotions. One of the best ways to overcome stress is to do something to help someone else. Even better, feeling good and doing good can combine to create a positive feedback loop, where doing good helps us to feel good and feeling good also makes us more likely to do good.
  8. Start where you’re at – CTW strategies you can implement right now and inspiration to take over the world. An ancient Chinese proverb says, “A journey of 1,000 miles must begin with one step.” We work on how to get started taking action to make a difference.
  9. Balancing your passionate life. When the many areas of your life get out of alignment, you can make adjustments that will dramatically enhance your work, your finances, your relationships, and your health. Your balancing act can defy gravity!

These are the steps of the Balance Academy System™ that I’ve created after working with hundreds and hundreds of clients.

How quickly can I expect results and what can I do to make sure of it?

This, of course, depends on where you are at right now, where you want to go, and how much you put into the assignments you’re given. My clients usually see results in the first few weeks of us working together. Attending scheduled calls, teleclasses, and webinars and then doing the assignments will make sure you get the most out of our work together.  These programs are not a “magic pill” and (even though I’d love to) I don’t wave a “magic wand,” but sometimes my clients sometimes think it’s magic.  It takes time and consistent implementation and accountability to build new ways of doing things and the rewards are great!

Will I recover the investment I put into this coaching program?
